Our ancestors Nikolaus and Katherine Weber Achen came to Iowa from far Western Germany in 1881 and settled near the town of St. Lucas, where they farmed a small tract of land. After Nikolaus’ death, Katherine was left to care for two daughters and three sons and found herself with a labor issue. She had too many children and not enough land to keep everyone busy! So she purchased a larger farm just South of Jackson Junction, Iowa. We still farm those original acres today.
Fast forward to the 21st century and Achen Farms is now run by the 4th and 5th generation, Tom Achen and his daughter Hannah. We grow row crops and raise cattle and we’re honored to produce safe, affordable and nutritious food, fiber and fuel. We’ve got an amazing crew of full and part time employees that help make this ship sail.
For years now, we’ve been busy providing nutritious, quality beef to the larger marketplace. We recognize the multiple roles we play within the food supply chain, and we're proud to fill each of them. But the importance of supporting local food systems and providing a farm to table eating experience has not been lost on us.
In 2021 Hannah opened Achen Farms Beef to do just that.
